Blog Catchup - Progress on Projects and other Writings
Good day everyone!
It’s been an incredibly long time since I’ve updated my Goodreads blog. It’s not forgetfulness, business or even laziness (which this post will attest to is quite the opposite), but I simply wanted to keep my Call for Papers for my Neo-Peplum book up as long as possible as my most current post. Since I’ve closed the window for submissions, I feel like I can update this blog again! I have a lot of catchup to do since my last productivity post which was in…. February?!? Cripes!
First things first is that I have ANOTHER Call for papers open! Michele and I are the co-chairs of a brand new academic conference, the Ann Radcliffe Academic Conference, which is part of StokerCon! Our first conference will be in April 2017, but the window to submit abstracts closes at the end of December. So all you budding horror academics out there, please take a look at our CFP and consider submitting! The link to it is right here:
http://stokercon2017.horror.org/ann-r...
Secondly, I had my very first short story published! I don’t dabble in fiction much, but the opportunity came up, I gave it a shot, got accepted and got published! Very cool! It’s a story called “Nix’s Night About Town” and it appears in the anthology Kill Those Damn Cats: Cats of Ulthar – Lovecraftian Anthology. As many of yall know, I like to consider myself an aspiring Lovecraft scholar, being part of the HP Lovecast Podcast, so being able to write a story to contribute to the Lovecraft canon was a real honour. So please, check out the book and consider giving it a purchase! Here is the Amazon link to it:
https://www.amazon.com/Kill-Those-Dam...
In terms of smaller writing projects, I have been productive in terms of writing reviews and articles for both Heathen Harvest and Fanbase Press. I invite you to check out my work at these websites and consider supporting them as well!

Interview with the synthwave project Red Marker: https://heathenharvest.org/2016/10/16...
Review of the John Murphy Tribute compilation: https://heathenharvest.org/2016/09/18...
Review of Something to Drink 6 by the cabaret-industrial band Division 6: https://heathenharvest.org/2016/06/25...

Review of Grave Needs by the neofolk project Time Moth Eye: https://heathenharvest.org/2016/04/27...
Review of From the Ashes by the Dark Pop group Miel Noir: https://heathenharvest.org/2016/03/26...
Review of René Guénon et la tradition primordiale by the industrial project TSIDMZ: https://heathenharvest.org/2016/02/24...
For Fanbase Press:
Review of Ben-Hur (2016): http://fanbasepress.com/index.php/pre...
Review of Stan Drake and Leonard Starr’s Kelly Green – The Complete Collection: http://fanbasepress.com/index.php/blo...
Review of the Lovecraftian anthology Whispers from the Abyss Vol 2: http://fanbasepress.com/index.php/blo...
In regards to the HP Lovecast Podcast, we been plugging away with more sessions. We had technical issues these past two months, but expect to resume in November. Those can always be found at http://www.hplovecast.com
Currently write now, I am working on the introduction to my neo-peplum book, an essay on the TV show Stranger Things, a few book reviews, and possibly another essay on an old Silly Symphonies cartoon. For novel November, I may take a stab at this – but not for a novel, but a short story. I’ve taste the success of writing one short story, I’d like to do it again.
That is is for this time! Appreciate everyone’s support.

Lovecraft Book review, music, Stranger Things and other Things
Wow, only a few days since my last blog here on Goodreads and I had an explosion of activity!
First things first, I had 4 articles published in the past week! Yikes! I am never that prolific, but hey – things are going on!
I read the book Daughters of Arkham since I love diving into Lovecraft-things, and I penned a review of it that was just published at Fanbase Press. That can be read here:
http://www.fanbasepress.com/index.php...
While at the Stan Lee Los Angeles Comic Con this past weekend, I attended a panel about Shannon Purser, the actress who plays Barb in Stranger Things. I documented the panel as best as I could, and that was also published at Fanbase Press:
http://www.fanbasepress.com/index.php...
On the music front, I had two reviews published at Heathen Harvest. The first one was for Napoleonic Blues, the newest album by the legendary neofolk project Ostara. That can be read here:
https://heathenharvest.org/2016/10/28...
The next one was on “The Beginning”, the newest album for the synthpop/EBM band Syntec. This was their first album in 21 years! The link to that one is here:
https://heathenharvest.org/2016/10/29...
On the writing front, I’m still juggling a few projects.
For my neopeplum book I am still working on the introduction. Mid-December is when the essays are due back to me, so I definitely want to get my intro done ASAP.
Still in very early stages of my Stranger Things and synthwave essay.
Also in planning stages on a short essay on the old Silly Symphonies cartoons of the 1930s.
I also may be working on a short story too – a combination of Italo Calvino’s Cosmicomics and some Lovecraft.
I am trying to also finish a book review on Music at the Extreme which I keep working on and off.
Dang! Lot’s to do, but anxious to see it all realized!
ALSO! Remember, I am co-chairing the Ann Radcliffe Academic Con at next year’s StokerCon. If you’re an academic and have a paper or presentation on anything horror related, please submit an abstract to me! More info can be found here:

Until next time folks!

Heilge Tod Blog News
In September I quit my position of being a contributor to Heathen Harvest. My musings on neofolk and martial-industrial music will continue at my Heilige Tod blog.
Recently, I did a review of the new Allerseelen 7" single:
https://heiligetod.blogspot.com/2017/...
Upcoming will be an article on the band Hands of Ruin and their soundtrack of The Fall of the House of Usher and I will be resurrecting my abandoned Verney 1826 essays.
Misc. Web Writing
I contibuted a blog entry to the Horror Writers Association Halloween Haunts Blog. My article was on the genesis of the Ann Radcliffe Academic Conference and my own personal experiences presenting at cons: http://horror.org/horror-academics-mi...
Conferences and Presentations
This past weekend I was part of a panel on the Swords and Sorcery genre at the Stan Lee LA Comic Book Con. Photos of the panel (along with the convention proper) can be found at the Fanbase Press Facebook gallery: https://www.facebook.com/pg/FanbasePr...
The Ann Radcliffe Academic Conference is still open for CFPs for a few more weeks. If interested, please consider submitting an abstract. Details can be found here: http://stokercon2018.org/the-conventi...
Writing and Publishing News
Michele Brittany and I are currently signing a contract for a new edited anthology that we will be editing together. More details on that later.
The release of the Horror in Space anthology should be occurring very soon. I’m excited for my essay on meteorite-horror films and HP Lovecraft to see publication.
I’ve submitted my chapter on Stranger Things and synthwave music to my editor.
My Neo-Peplum book is still in my publisher’s hands, so updates on that one a little bit later
I submitted a review to the Journal of Graphic Novels and comics.
Upcoming Projects
Working on editing and rewriting my Re-Animator presentation to be a chapter in an book.
I’ve also begun researching material for my next book idea – a possible monograph. Will need to get further along in the research process to determine feasibility, but it if it turns out that it is possible, it will be my first solo endeavor.
I also was an extra in a movie!
That's it for now. See you all in December! (Unless you want to follow me on Facebook or my website at nickdiak.com where I am a but more up to date with my news)
