Many of you were here for last weeks discussion regarding What Makes a Real Writer? When we decide to become professional writers, we have a lot of work ahead of us and sadly, most will not make the cut.

I know its a grossly inaccurate movie, but I love G.I. Jane.I recall a scene during Hell Week (the first evolution of S.E.A.L. training) where Master Chief has everyone doing butterfly kicks in the rain. He yells at the recruits to look to their left and look to their right, that statistically, those people will quit.

Who will be the first to ring that bell? Who will be the first to quit?

Years ago, one of my mentors mentioned The 5% Rule. Whats The 5% Rule? So happy you asked. Statistically, only 5% of the population is

The Ugly Truth About Book Sales

Originally posted on Leona's Blog of Shadows:

Today I am going to share some eye-opening truths, which might shatter the illusions regarding the book publishing business and crush the dreams of some folk out there. I have recently come across a rather interesting blog post link in the comments section under a post at Suffolk Scribblings blog.

It was a rather grim post by author Kameron Hurley. For those who are not familiar with her, she is an established author who has been a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Locus Award and the BSFA Award for Best Novel. Her short fiction has appeared in prestigious SFF magazines such as Lightspeed, EscapePod, and Strange Horizons. Her fiction has been translated into Romanian, Swedish, Spanish, and Russian. She is also a graduate of Clarion West. Impressive credentials many of us dream about accomplishing some day, if ever.

According to her…

Book Cover Design – The Law

Originally posted on :

The only way to ensure that you have a one hundred percent original, and copyright infringement free cover for your book is to either make it yourself with all your own images, or purchase a bespoke artwork, specifically created for you. Not everyone is inclined to create their own, and bespoke book covers are very expensive, so many Indies use images bought, or downloaded for free online. Before we actually use these covers, there are a couple of things that we need to know.

All photos and images found online are automatically protected by copyright. If you download any picture without permission or payment, thinking that if you just fiddle with it a bit and change it with a bit of judicious rendering it will be alright, that isn’t true, and you are infringing on the copyright of its owner, and could find yourself in quite a bit of expensive…

FORBIDDEN TRAILS

Please follow this link to nominate my new book, FORBIDDEN TRAILS, for a publishing contract with Amazon!  Thank you!!!

https://kindlescout.amazon.com/p/13082TKB6YS38

Here is how this contest works: The first pages (about 5,000 words) from each book are posted on the Kindle Scout website for a 30-day scouting period where readers can nominate up to three books at a time. The more nominations a book receives, the more likely it gets discovered by the Kindle Scout team, so please help me promote this contest. If selected, the book will be published by Kindle Press and all the readers who nominated the book will receive an early, free copy and be invited to leave reviews.  Your vote for FORBIDDEN TRAILS means so much to me.  Thank you for your support.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER, RIGHT?

It’s an age-old question—does it really matter if you are older or younger than your significant other?  Well, maybe not if it’s only by a year or two or five, even ten?  But, what about twenty years or more?  Now does it matter?

Is it possible to be romantically involved with someone who is ‘significantly’ younger than you are and not feel insecure about having them dump you to be with someone their own age?  Can you ignore the possibility of spending time—maybe years—with this younger person only to have them decide to leave when you are growing older and can no longer keep up with them physically or if they’ve outgrown you socially or financially as they have matured?  Does the younger person in this sort of relationship have concerns of their own about being replaced by someone older?  What if one of them has become embarrassed to be seen in public with the other one or to introduce them as their romantic partner or spouse?

In a May-December relationship how difficult is it to ignore the outside influences and pressures from society or family and friends who think that you would be so much better off with someone closer to your own age?

Will fears and self-doubt from one or both partners eventually destroy a relationship between two people who are from different generations?  Or, is age just a number if those two people truly love one another?

(I will be doing a series of blog posts about relationships, feelings and life in general as research and background material for my new book, A WOMAN MY AGE.  I look forward to hearing your opinions and comments on the subjects I will be discussing here.  Thank you.)
