A. B. McFarland began her passionate love affair with writing when she was a child, and as a young adult, performed her poetry live on FM radio and other venues. She has professionally published newspaper articles and technical documents, and has a Master’s degree in Technical Communication. She enjoys writing realistic fiction about quirky characters, especially those who do not fit traditional gender stereotypes.

Her novel Pieces of Home is set in Seattle, a city she knows well after living there for more than two decades. The novel contains contributions from multiple characters, written in different styles, just as her poetry reflects the personalities of various imaginary characters.

In my early teen years (which I've heard shape you more than people realize) I was influenced by seeing early 1980's innovative music videos by alternative bands, and by reading psychology books like "Touching" by Ashley Montagu. Later I discovered books like "The Tin Drum" by Gunter Grass and "Mumbo Jumbo" by Ishmael Reed. From those I learned to appreciate when an author can touch the pulse of what's happening socially during a pivotal moment in history. More recently, I have enjoyed character-driven, mind-f*cking, gender-bender mangas like "Pandora Hearts" and "Grand Guignol Orchestra."(less)

I think my strategies for dealing with the Inner Critic help prevent a lot of trouble. (See 'advice for aspiring writers' question/answer).(less)

Writing

I write when the pain of holding back the words is greater than the pain of letting them go.

T.S. Eliot
“Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm; but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.”
T.S. Eliot

Thomas Merton
“The more you try to avoid suffering, the more you suffer, because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you, in proportion to your fear of being hurt. The one who does most to avoid suffering is, in the end, the one who suffers most.”
Thomas Merton, The Seven Storey Mountain

Tamora Pierce
“Threats are the last resort of a man with no vocabulary.”
Tamora Pierce, Lady Knight

Mahatma Gandhi
“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”
Mahatma Gandhi
