In the madhouse of work world, I only recently saw the news. Chest is sunk. My god. Historically, I’ve been really good at housing blind spots, often with regards to race. One time I got caught red-handed with a blind spot. Got real defensive, publicly. A friend, Sonya Renee Taylor, who was strong enough to not fucking crush me, said something I really want my friends and family to hear, “This is one of those places where taking it in, the parts you agree with and the parts you don’t, and just sitting in them, is essential to the dialogue. This is [a] place where you just listen. Not forever but certainly for now. The dialogue is happening all around you. You don’t need to conduct it. Sitting and listening even when you have tons to say, even when you just wanna say ‘see I am not the only one’ is uncomfortable but is an act of solidarity. It is relinquishing just a bit of privilege. You know what you see. It is what you don’t see, that is where the growth is.”

Saul Williams was just added to the lineup! These aren’t just performances and Q&A’s in this summer-long series, (June 2- Aug 31), most are also facilitating writing workshops directly after their performances. @awfulgoodwriters

One time the founder of Write Bloody, Derrick Brown, asked a waitress what the soup du jour of the day was. That’s all it took. I fell to the floor laughing uncontrollably. I can’t say there’s been a day in 20 years when and we’ve been in each other’s physical presence that I haven’t laughed. Derrick will be hosting the Write Bloody showcase with the folks on this flyer and a whole bunch more of the @writebloodypublishing authors June 6th. I’ve lived in a van on tour with most of these jokers, and shared stages with the rest. And I’m proud to call them my friends. Come laugh, live, and hear what it sounds like when Poetry doesn’t suck.

Someone’s partner made this for them on their 40th birthday, inspired by the 2014 Riled Up and Wasted On Light Tour poster. They used a quote from A Choir of Honest Killers. Great job. If you’re the artist, lemme know who to credit.
