March in February
Our winter this year is disorganized. We had January temperatures in September. February snow in January, and now we have March temperatures in February. I guess you could say we've been living inside a weather blender. Likely wouldn't matter too much to most, but when you've moved to the country, it matters a lot. All of life is about our reliance on weather patterns. Meanwhile, I have packs of heirloom seeds I'm wondering when to sprout and shoes are lined up like troops because we need so many different types on any given day. Phil's muck boots are permanently mucked, so they stay in the pickup. Instead of hiring a snowplow this year, we're spreading bales of straw over the muddy ground where plant life was disturbed last fall and not reseeded. You've heard of Montana gumbo? Eastern Washington gumbo is much the same: gooey, tenacious, and slippery as egg yolks. You pick up a pound of mud on your shoe with each step. There's a reason every business in our region has those prickly boot scrapers outside the door. The message is plain: keep your mud off our floor!

Jagged Edge of the Sky
If you've read any of my books, you've read about my father. He and his indomitable imagination and creative spirit have provided for me a library full of idiosyncrasies to parody, snatch, and otherwise requisition for my quirky characters. Jagged Edge of the Sky, however, is the book that took him most into consideration, as the father character Edmonds Tuor is a blatant caricature of my daddy. Edmonds carries the same childspirit and lighthearted approach to living juxtaposed by a globe-sized work ethic that belonged to my father.
It's only a problem in need of a solution. That was Dad's response to just about any question.
Perhaps because of him, perhaps because of the way he brought me up to always take the harder, most intriguing, most educational path to finding those solutions, my writing can be . . . complicated. I've heard that people have thrown my books across the floor in consternation. I always take the hard road in life, and I shamelessly lead my readers down tough paths, too. I think it's good for us.
I say all this to prepare readers. Jagged Edge of the Sky is guaranteed to leave you scratching your head. The further you go, the more connections you make, but they are not hand-fed. Oh no. I'll make you pick up that rock pile one pebble at a time. These sixteen characters are going to tremble your foundation.
How do I know this? For starters, there are no exclamation marks. Not one. Why? I'm hoping you'll be able to figure that out.
You'll also notice that time makes weird wishy-washy moves. Sometimes it folds back on itself like origami. Sometimes it hopscotches.
Other things will give you a wishy-washy, stomach-in-the-air feeling in Jagged Edge of the Sky. For instance, the sex scenes. Call it literary squirming.
The book goes on sale Mar. 29 and will be available through all retail outlets, both brick-and-mortar and online. I will be looking for early readers to write reviews, enter a drawing for free copies of the book, and participate in the Facebook Early Readers book club. I can also come to your area to hold signings, readings, workshops---whatever your group, creative writing class, or local bookstore might like. If any of these things interest you, please email me at coom1286@hotmail.com!
As always, thank you so very much for your interest in my work. Let's keep the conversation going on social media. Follow me:

TIME
Not sure where time goes, exactly, although we all know time doesn't exactly exist. It is like water--it takes whatever shape it is poured into.
This year, my time has been shaped by book promotions, job responsibilities, and the occasional blessed bout of R&R. I finished a new novel, have another one in the publication pipe, and have transitioned out of my longstanding academic teaching position to one in the publishing industry. Then there are the 5 grandchildren, parents, sibs, and then there is still this house. Our master bedroom stalemated waiting for us to decide on a paint color since we don't like the one we put up after all.
So, little things like Goodreads posts, Amazon posts, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, all the places where I usually interact with readers have gone to the wayside. This post is way of offering my apologies and a promise to do better.

BLUE MOON VEGAN!
I'm afraid I must apologize for not checking in here for so long, but I'm happy to be here now, announcing the upcoming release of my first cookbook (yes I still write poetry and literary fiction, but creating recipes from fresh, organic, vegan, and gluten-free ingredients has become a passion).
So! Valentine's Day is THE day, but, I will share a secret: you can go ahead and order it from your favorite retailer!

NEW RELEASE DATE
BLUE MOON VEGAN is an actual book. I promise. It is full of wonderful, original, gluten-free and vegan recipes. It is beautifully photographed in full color with over 100 recipes ranging from mochas to muffins, each with a cute little story about how it came to be.
What it is not, however, is here yet. The release date has been pushed off until Valentine's Day, thanks to some unexpected snafus that were outside of anyone's control.
What we do have, however, is a cover! Designed once again by Booktrope's Greg Simansen, as has been the case for all the books he's done the art for, Greg captures the books essence and tops it with a cherry. I've been in love with his work ever since he did DOVE CREEK and am proud to have him in my corner! Check out www.paulamariecoomer.com for a glimpse.
