Do you review what you read?

Writers love to write and readers like to read. This is pretty obvious - right?
An author writes a book and either has it published by a third party, or the author self-publishes. Readers - especially fans of particular authors - purchase the book or download sometimes for free. What then?
How does the author know if a reader likes the book, loves the book or even (heaven forbid) hates the book? Unless a reader writes directly to the author the only way to tell if the book is doing well is by sales or more importantly - Reviews! A review which states "this is nice but..." allows the author to understand how the reader perceives the book and possibly what can be done to improve the story. A review which states "I love this book, when's the next one coming out?" makes writing the book really worthwhile.
Unfortunately, not many readers leave reviews. If only one in ten readers wrote down their thoughts on whether they enjoyed the book; which bits they liked; what they thought could make it better - all these responses would help the author improve their work.

If you read a book and enjoy it - take an extra few minutes and leave a review on your favorite online book store. You will make the author's day when they see you've shown appreciation of their work.

Free Romantic Fantasy Ebook

Another free book with the option to receive another free book. If you read these books and like them it would be lovely if you could post a review on your favourite ebook supplier. Here are the details.

Merhnaz, a free book from the Cloud Kingdom series. Mehrnaz is a prequel to Book 2 of the series - Elisette.

Description
Mehrnaz of Pator and Lusak of Rak live on the planet Hejmen. They fall in love when they meet at a ball in Rak, but her parents wish her to marry Dromarn, heir to the dukedom of Marn. On their first meeting Dromarn lays down the rules for their married life and how his wife should behave. Mehrnaz informs her parents she wishes to marry Lusak, but her mother has no intention of allowing her daughter to marry a second son and refuses to allow Mehrnaz and Lusak to meet. The couple plan to elope but to meet Lusak, Mehrnaz must cross the desert alone.ExcerptThe mattporter couldn't take the Pator party all at once and they were lifted to the sky castle in groups. Up in the castle the noble family of Rak had already greeted Duke Osrat and his family, now Tikat and his family moved forward.
Duke Davak, his wife Elisette and their three sons waited to greet them. Patak, the eldest, stood with his wife just behind his parents. Dernak, the youngest stood to one side, trying not to cough. He looked quite sickly and Mehrnaz turned to look at the other son. Her breath caught in her throat. Lusak, the Duke's middle son, looked exactly like the heroes in her books.Dark auburn hair curled down to his collar, while his skin glowed with a tan which told of a life spent mainly outside. He caught her looking at him and winked at her."Mehrnaz. Mind your manners."Her mother's nudge brought her back to her duties and she curtsied to the ducal family then moved on with her parents. Servants arrived to show them to their rooms. As they left the main dock, Mehrnaz glanced over her shoulder. Lusak watched her and this time he grinned at her and mouthed the word later.

Reva's Quest - Fantasy for Middle-Grade Readers

To round off my two weeks of fantasy authors I would like to tell you about one of my own fantasy books for Middle-Grade readers.
Reva is a young girl whose parents have moved several times due to her father's job. This means she has to keep enrolling in new schools and try to make new friends which is not an easy task. To help her cope Reva writes a book about the magical land of Fey.
With the help of her animated garden gnome, she travels through a portal to the real land of Fey where she is blamed for the evil that has taken over. With her gnome, two elves and a griffin she goes on a quest to find and deal with the evil entity, who the elves have named Malice. The way is not easy due to the altered nature of the magical creatures of Fey, plus Reva believes the group have a traitor in their midst.
Reva's Quest: A Magical Journey is presently free from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and many other on line stores or the book can be downloaded from Instafreebie. There's also a chance to get a second middle-grade book free.

Unicorns galore

Welcome Suzanne, my you've been busy. I keep meaning to get The Deception as I thoroughly enjoyed The Legacy so I'm off to Amazon as soon as I've finished this post. I also love fantasy which is why I love your books. Thanks again for visiting.

Fantasy, fantasy, fantasy! How I love fantasy, and that’s why I wrote my unicorn trilogy. However, the third of Shadow of the Unicorn series has yet to come out. But let me tell you about the other two.
The Legacy (Shadow of the Unicorn, book 1)
Azaria, a unicorn colt, is intrigued when the young, clairvoyant dinosaur, Darius, foresees a terrifying change to their world. When a giant fireball smashes into the earth, the unicorns struggle to survive the hurricanes and starvation that follow. But nothing compares to the danger when the creatures-that-walk-on-two-legs settle in the valley, and their leader discovers the healing power in the unicorns’ horns. Greedy and ruthless, Ishmael will stop at nothing in his pursuit of wealth – even the complete extinction of the herd. Azaria must find a way to outsmart Ishmael before it’s too late.

The Deception (Shadow of the Unicorn, book 2)

Sixty years after the unicorns’ narrow escape from extinction, Azaria's Legacy has gone wrong. The new generation barely exists, hidden in the depths of the forest. Their cruel and ruthless leader, Icarus, threatens them daily with Jaresh, an invisible being capable of taking away their powers. Angry, the young colt Ulysees and his friend Téo rebel, following an old, abandoned trail where they’re discovered by humans. Now the entire herd must flee. But Ulysees learns there’s a far greater danger than humans when he meets a giant creature who warns him of impending doom…

The third one is entitled: The Revenge (Shadow of the Unicorn, book 3). And here’s what it’s about.
Born deep in the forest, far from the herd, Damien is kept a dark secret by his parents until his father, Samuel, decides the colt must join the other foals to be initiated. But the unicorns are h orrified by Damien’s birth defect. They see him as a freak despite his astonishing abilities. Then when Samuel is pushed to his death by a rival, Damien’s talents turn deadly. Can anyone stop him before he destroys their world?

But guess what? I wrote a young teen novel too, called, A Town Bewitched. It’s a paranormal mystery. It’s tough for Kira, growing up in the small town of Hope as a child prodigy in classical violin, especially when her dad just died. And to make matters worse, Kate McDonough, the red-haired fiddler appears out of nowhere and bewitches the town with her mysterious Celtic music. Even Uncle Jack succumbs to her charms, forgetting his promise to look after Kira’s family. But when someone begins vandalizing the town leaving dead and gutted birds as a calling card, Kira knows without a doubt who’s behind it.
I bet you’re wondering what comes next besides The Revenge? I have a lovely YA historical romance coming out in September called Fields of Gold Beneath Prairie Skies. It’s based on the story of my grandparents who met during WWI in Belgium and moved to Canada where they acquired a homestead. Then the dirty thirties hit.
Anyway, here are the links to my novels on Amazon:

Finding Angel

Welcome to my blog Kat Heckenbach. Kat is a fantasy writer for young adults and the Toch Island Chronicle books set out below sound wonderful. Thanks for visiting Kat.
In the enchanted forest in our back yard.It was easy to get from my room to the forest. There was a secret passageway in my closet. All I had to do was step inside, close the door, and climb down through the trapdoor in the floor.I would traverse the long, dark, underground passageway after grabbing the chamber stick from my mom's vanity table. The candlelight would flicker off the white walls and dance on the brown linoleum under my feet. (Yes, castles can have linoleum floors in their secret passageways.)The passageway opened into a large antechamber, often guarded by a troll who watched a magic box that showed teams of strange men in helmets and uniforms running back and forth across a field. I would sneak past unnoticed to the door that led out to the enchanted forest, and slip silently through. (Actually, it was pretty easy to sneak by the troll--he was usually asleep.)Once outside, I tread carefully. All sorts of dangerous things in an enchanted forest. Best to stick tight to the trees and move quickly across open spaces. Most often I ended up at my favorite tree in the back of the forest. It grew oddly, at about a thirty-degree angle, with the top cut off and a single branch sticking straight up. Because of the angle, I could walk up the trunk. There was definitely magic surrounding it because the height always changed when I climbed it.  Even though the highest point was only about five feet off the ground when I stood beside it, after several steps I would find myself at a vantage that allowed me to see our entire kingdom. And when I needed a horse, a simple blanket thrown across the trunk would transform it. I would straddle the blanket and a mighty steed appeared beneath me, ready to gallop out of the forest and across the vast field that stretched for miles beyond. At night, stars filled the sky, and the moon filtered through the treetops while my enchanted forest burst with fairy lights (you may call them fireflies, but that is likely because they never showed their true form to you).At the end of the day, I settled into bed to read. I would gaze jealously at the author's name on the cover. If only I were more imaginative I could have seen myself writing a book, with a whole made-up world inside. I really don't know how I became a writer...

Finding Angel:
Angel doesn't remember her magical heritage...but it remembers her.
Magic and science collide when she embarks on a journey to her true home, and to herself.
Angel lives with a loving foster family, but dreams of a land that exists only in the pages of a fantasy novel. Until she meets Gregor, whose magic Talent saves her life and revives lost memories.
She follows Gregor to her homeland...a world unlike any she has imagined, where she travels a path of self-discovery that leads directly to her role in an ancient Prophecy...and to the madman who set her fate in motion.

Seeking Unseen:
It may be Angel's wish... It's been two years since Angel learned the magic chip of wood inside her locket would grant any wish. What is taking her so long to choose? An alarming discovery about her beloved foster brother Zack makes the decision easy...but everything else gets complicated after she runs into her old friend Melinda, who demands to go along for the return to Toch Island.
...but it's Melinda's journey.Melinda doesn't fit in with the magical freaks any more than she did with the losers back in Florida, but she never wanted to belong before. A secret world surrounds her where even the bugs have magic... She's more of an outsider than ever. So when ex-con Doran Ashe slinks out of the shadows and offers her an easy road to powers of her own, Melinda follows him despite-or maybe because of-everyone's warnings.

Legacy Rewound:
Melinda knew Kalek’s music created powerful visions, but it wasn’t supposed to actually send her into the past!
It definitely wasn’t supposed to bring someone back to the present with her. Especially not someone tied so tightly to Melinda’s own past, someone to prove, once again, that her family ancestry was made up of psychopaths who should never have existed.
Now it’s her chance to change her lineage--and history--forever.

Stairway to Heaven

Welcome to Cheryle Williams and Stairway to Heaven. The cover makes me want to read this book, it's absolutely gorgeous. You need to read to the end of this post to discover the surprise at the end. Thanks for visiting Cheryle. Over to you.
STAIRWAY TO HEAVENBy Cheryle WilliamsDesert Breeze Publishing
“No fair! Is that all the time I get?” wonders my young heroine of the YA paranormal fantasy Stairway to Heaven. Unfortunately for Minx Reston, sixteen years on earth is all the years she gets to enjoy on this plane of existence. The young actress is kicked in the head by Rudolph the reindeer while filming her cable TV Christmas special.Lights out. Tough luck, girl. The world as she knows it has come to an end. Next thing Minx realizes, she’s floating above her battered form, looking down as paramedics work to resuscitate her lifeless body. Soon that image disappears as the cord between spirit and flesh is cut. Her time on earth is over. She finds herself floating in a gray void, waiting for the next step in her existence. For she exists as something. Her mind still functions. The afterlife wouldn’t leave her hanging like this, would it?But no angel guide comes to conduct her to the Heaven’s Gate, which is the usual procedure for those making the transition from life to death to a brand new life in heaven. There’s been a slipup in procedures. Minx is left hanging but another heavenly being hears her cries of despair. Reid was seventeen when he died in a drowning accident. He’ll always be seventeen in heaven, where he serves as a guardian flyer in a corps of dark-winged angel beings who patrol the lower plane of heaven. They wear leather and carry swords. They need weapons to swing at the demons from hell who intrude and cause mischief. The last thing Reid has time for is a rescue of a transitioning young spirit.Yet Reid makes time to rescue Minx and fly her to the Stairway to Heaven. Thereby begins their story. A sweet heavenly attachment develops between the two angelic beings, one a ten-year veteran of heaven. One still needing to go through the training phase. I wrote this novel because the question always intrigued me, what happens after a human soul crosses into the great beyond? I know the religious explanations of what is supposed to happen, but I leave all that out in my story. Everyone can believe what they want, but I wanted to produce a fun fantasy that will give readers hope that a bright new life that awaits us all. This is my own fantasy. It does not conform to any religious or spiritual creed. There’s no religious dogma in my story. The scenarios I create will make a reader think and dream and live with hope.Haven’t we all made a comment about someone who has passed on, “they’re really shaking things up in heaven now.” Surely we have greater tasks ahead of us. Join Minx and Reid on their journey in a new frontier where the possibilities are endless. Have fun.I wrote this 75K novel partly because I have young relatives who passed at young ages. I believe in the power of heaven’s love for all of us. I’m hoping my loved ones who have passed on are having the grandest time in heaven. Whatever awaits us, we can trust that the angels above are watching over us while we fulfill our time down below.

Cheryle Williams has two YA novels published through Desert Breeze Publishing, a small press publisher based in California.
