Janyre Tromp is a historical novelist who loves spinning tales that, at their core, hunt for beauty, even when it isn’t pretty. She’s the best-selling historical author of Darkness Calls the Tiger and Shadows in the Mind’s Eye and coauthor of O Little Town and It’s a Wonderful Christmas.

She’s also a book editor, children’s book author, and lives in Michigan with her family, two crazy cats, and a slightly eccentric dog. Hang out with her on social media or through her newsletter (sign up on her website www.JanyreTromp.com).

What a great question. I love the opportunity and reminder to evaluate where I'm headed.

I'm naturally a bit of a risk-taker. Not that you'll see me jumping out of a plane anytime soon. But I see the world, my life, as an adventure.

Even though I have commitments to fulfill and responsibilities to attend, I am purposeful in growing and learning. I don't know who said it, but I subscribe to the idea that if you aren't growing, you're dying.

So every summer for the last few years, I take a little time to evaluate where I'm headed for the year. Last year I was able to sit back and learn to be still, be silent, listen. It was a huge gift. This year, however, I'm learning how to take that into a more normal life.

At the moment, I'm kind of in experiment mode where I'm beginning to reach out a little more--a huge risk for someone who's a bit of an introvert. I'm writing 1500 words a day in a crazy attempt to complete 50,000 words in a month. For some, that's a full-length novel, for me it will bring me to the end of my work in progress. In addition I started a blog and I'm being a little more purposeful in establishing relationships with people . . . and not just my imaginary friends in my head :)

Thanks again for such a great question.(less)

I guess I would summarize my response as taking a break and going back at it later when I have a different perspective.

So, for example, if I am struggling with a certain scene, I might literally mark it in square brackets and say how I feel about it or what is missing. If you read early drafts you'll see things like "[Ach. I can't write this right now. Ryan needs to have more emotion, but I'm not sure how he should deal with this.]" I'll go back later after I've had a chance to think about, talk it through with friends (or my dog if no one is available). I'm amazed how often something I'm struggling through will come up in conversation or in something I'm reading.(less)

4 Tips on Making Change Beautiful

I’m sitting on my deck, overlooking the woods, a cool breeze shifts through make the leaves bow and rise, bow and rise . . . almost as if they’re nodding in agreement with the chill in the air–change is coming.

And it isn’t just the movement that reflects coming winter, it’s in the shifting of colors–shading from green to red to brown. And I can’t help contemplating change and coming to the end of

“We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out.”
Ray Bradbury

“The job of an artist and writer is to see the things other people miss and introduce the two.”

“If you’re alive, you’re a creative person. You and I and everyone you know are descended from tens of thousands of years of makers. Decorators, tinkerers, storytellers, dancers, explorers, fiddlers, drummers, builders, growers, problem-solvers, and embellishers—these are our common ancestors. The guardians of high culture will try to convince you that the arts belong only to a chosen few, but they are wrong and they are also annoying. We are all the chosen few. We are all makers by design. Even if you grew up watching cartoons in a sugar stupor from dawn to dusk, creativity still lurks within you. Your creativity is way older than you are, way older than any of us. Your very body and your very being are perfectly designed to live in collaboration with inspiration, and inspiration is still trying to find you—the same way it hunted down your ancestors.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

“Human knowledge is never contained in one person. It grows from the relationships we create between each other and the world, and still it is never complete.”
Paul Kalanithi, When Breath Becomes Air

“People said Ove saw the world in black and white. But she was color. All the color he had.”
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove
