The top book I'm reading this summer is CYCLING THE GREAT DIVIDE by Michael McCoy, published by Mountaineers Books. My husband and are doing the Great Divide Mountain-Bike Route from the border of Mexico to Banff, Canada, with him mountain-biking and me as his his support and logistics trail angel, and also hiking in the wilderness and towns along our route. CYCLING THE GREAT DIVIDE is our biking bible. The book is written with directions from north to south, so everything in it is backwards for us, which is a challenge, but hey, it's a ton better than no guidebook at all!

My husband, Porter, and I each kept a journal on waterproof paper while hiking the 2,663-mile Pacific Crest Trail. I got a huge kick out of our conflicting versions of exactly the same events. I intended to juxtapose them on opposite sides of the page, but I Promise Not to Suffer evolved to include not just a chronology and geography of our hiking adventures but resonances with our marriage and inner lives--emotional, spiritual, and hysterical. ;-D

For seven of the nine years I worked on my book, I Promise Not to Suffer: A Fool for Love Hikes the Pacific Crest Trail, I was in a writing group of well published writers. We met each week to read and critique each other's work in progress. Each of us who brought work that week had it critiqued for at least an hour, so I was highly motivated to have my current chapter ready for discussion. I went through many drafts of my book that way, without stalling from writer's block.
