It wasn't so much the unceasing creaking of the trees that got him up from slumber and down the steps of the back porch that night, as the expectation that someone would meet him there in the shadows beneath.
By the time the sun crested the eastern hills, he was long gone, with no sign of his passage, but a single slipper left amid the pine needles as the infernal creaking continued, like an invisible gate on rusty hinges.

The book is written! And I think it's pretty dang good, if I do say so myself. Sequels are hard, and I was determined to make this one fresh, different, and not filler for what will happen next in that story. I think it's the best thing I've written yet. Thank you greatly for your patience, I got sidetracked by another book, a screenplay, and a TV show there for a bit as well -- but I'm hoping to get things moving and have something to announce for Book 2 sometime soonish. Spread the word on Book 1 - these little books without marketing money need all the support, reviews, advocates they can get in order to survive.

Thank you very much for reading and saying so! I am planning/hoping for that sequel, but my sales numbers are a little light -- so nothing is sure yet. I've outlined two sequels and written the first third of book two, and it gets bigger and better as it goes.
Spread the word to anyone who will listen; I have to convince the publisher that it's worth continuing. One way or another...

Hmmm. Off the top of my head, I'm going to have to go with Beren and Luthien from Chapter 19 of JRRT's The Silmarillion. They have the star-crossed aspect of Romeo & Juliet going on - but are both badasses to the core. Beren is this lone revenge hero who encapsulates the notion of human perseverance through suffering, and Luthien is this superhero elf princess who keeps busting all the rules, defying authority, and saving the day for her man again and again. It also has some of the best ancillary roles of any epic: like an army of werewolves, Vampire-warlock Sauron in his younger years, and the original Dark Lord, Morgoth. B & L, and their tragic love saga has it all.

Hey, Kriselda Gray! I'm actively working on it, but hope to step up the pace. About a quarter of the way through--lots more to do. Things get much bigger.
Hopefully I'll have some news on another unrelated book soon, too.

Inspiration is not to be relied on. Start writing and sometimes the inspiration flows, sometimes it doesn't. Some of my most "inspired" writing is terrible, and sometimes the stuff I have to drag and fight myself to get through is the best. You can't wait around for inspiration. Create it.
