Margaret, I wish I'd seen this question before now. I'm so sorry to keep you, and your son, waiting 7 months.
The second book in the series is out. It's called Glorieta. If your son liked Valverde and hasn't gotten Glorieta yet, please email me and I'll send him a copy. I'm at jennifer.bohnhoff@gmail.com

I took my wedding ring in to have the settings checked right before my 5th anniversary. The ring was a 130 year old antique, with three garnets. It wasn't terribly expensive, but it was one of a kind. While the jeweler was working on it, a man came in and asked to use the bathroom. The jeweler escorted him behind the counter. When the man left, the ring was gone.
I've often wondered what happened to that ring. Was it given to someone? Resold for drug money? Where is it now? I also wonder about the history of the ring before I got it. I bought it in an antique store in Oxford, England. Who wore it before I did?
I'm not sure if the story that came out of this would be a mystery or an historical novel, but it might be interesting.

Sad as their relationship is, I think my favorite fictitious couple are Dorothea Brooke and Edward Casaubon, in George Elliot's Middlemarch. Dorothea is a young and enthusiastic idealist who wants to save the world. Rather than marrying the rich young lord who would have allowed her to build cottages for the peasants, she falls for an older scholar, whose incomplete manuscript promises to answer all the questions plaguing man since the beginning of time. Soon after marrying him, Dorothea realizes that her husband's manuscript will never be completed, and it is not going to answer anyone's questions. He is a hopeless bumbler who refuses any assistance from her. Stuck in a loveless marriage, Dorothea perseveres stoically, and in the end is rewarded.
This couple isn't romantic nor ideal, but I think the message about looking deeply at the one who's attracted one's attention is an important message for all idealistic women.

I'm currently working on two different novels. Tweet Sarts is a funny contemporary middle grade novel due out in January, so I'm working on the cover and formatting it properly. In November, to celebrate National Novel Writing Month I wrote a first draft of Valverde, a middle grade Civil War novel set in New Mexico. I've put it aside until after the holidays, but I can't stop my brain from working on it anyway.
