The only way to become a great writer is to write. Then find someone with impeccable taste in the genre you're writing and ask them for their honest feedback. Even when you don't agree with their notes, take them, and rewrite, rewrite, rewrite! Once you finish a piece, start on another. Keep going. Never give up. Experience is the best teacher.

It's so hard for me to read other people's writing when I'm in the middle of some major piece of work like a novel or a screenplay. I've found I can easily lose track of my own voice. Currently, I'm working on another book AND two feature films! So my reading has been limited to research and the news. However, next up for me, once I have a little break, is Matt Haig's The Midnight Library, and I'm very excited about it!

I love the Italian countryside of André Aciman's Call Me By Your name, and I wish I could be there writing always, awash in the beauty of the summer.

I have an office in my home with a big desk to write at, but more often than not, I end up sitting on the couch in my den next to the backyard or at the dining room table looking out over the front yard. I need things to be quiet and comfortable, and I love when I can open the windows for a little fresh air.

When my words affect my readers lives on a deep level, when they make someone laugh or cry or think about the world in a different way, that’s one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever experienced.

Read great works of fiction and nonfiction. Keep them on your desk, and pick them up when you’re struggling with your own words. They will inevitably inspire you! My favorites are The Blind Assassin, The Poisonwood Bible, Interview with the Vampire, and Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story.

One day, the kids arrived in science class only to discover it wasn’t frogs they would be dissecting, for the frogs had taken over the school. No, on this day, it was the frogs who would be dissecting the kids.

Maybe I’ll answer this question with my next novel!
