L. Reynolds Andiric Globally, and frequently in the U. S., violent attacks have taken place in churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other religious sites. Much hate has been demonstrated against the beliefs of others and when it comes down to the facts of the attacks, those that carry out the violence do so because of misconceptions and misunderstanding. All religions advocate treating others with respect and as one would like to be treated themselves. Religion is, for the most part, a product of one’s culture and heritage and rarely does one bother to investigate thoroughly other systems of belief. With the falsehoods perpetuated today on social media, truth is elusive. My desire has been to provide accurate information about peoples’ religious beliefs without being a proponent for any one system of belief. I wanted to provide that information fully and accurately but also in non-philosophical, laymen language that is readable and understandable by the average person. Perhaps this knowledge can stop the violence.
L. Reynolds Andiric I have always written. I was the editor of my high school newspaper. I journal (although not daily) to remember as fully and completely as possible experiences I have had – good or bad. I have catharsed and put on paper my feelings - only to destroy the end product later but none-the-less feeling better and more settled for the effort. Writing it down helps me to stabilize my opinions and where I stand on controversial issues. It soothes me when I’m angry, preserves my happy times and puts things in perspective when I’m confused.
L. Reynolds Andiric I’m working on a novel, and I have never written a novel before. I have not formally studied creative writing, but I have a suspenseful tale in mind. It will take place in Africa where I taught in Tanzania.
L. Reynolds Andiric Have faith in yourself; persevere and find a good (and kind) editor. Don’t despair when criticized, remember critique is subjective, but it is also valuable in that it often provides surprising perspectives that help you improve or alternately can give you confidence.
L. Reynolds Andiric I can work in your pajamas or at the coffee shop sipping cappuccinos!
L. Reynolds Andiric I’ve dealt with writer’s block several ways successfully. I’ve accepted that I’m at a stalemate and moved on to something else or I stop writing and think it through – sometimes I even map out how I want to proceed with a diagram. Since I have written primarily non-fiction to date, doing a bit more research usually leads me in a more productive direction.
L. Reynolds Andiric I'm currently reading The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma, a Nigerian writer. I'm always impressed at the great writing of Nigerian authors. I enjoyed very much Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and since I worked in African countries, their stories fascinate me. Chinua Achebe's book Things Fall Apart is now considered an international classic, I believe.
