C.R. Sturgill 1) Write. 2) Write what's in your heart. Don't get caught up in what's popular at the moment. If you don't love writing it, the readers won't love reading it. 3) Write. Don't get bogged down trying to plan out every step of the plot in your head. Sometimes you just have to start writing and let the story and characters develop along the way.
C.R. Sturgill Not very well apparently. I suffered from writer's block for almost 20 years. The solution, however, is very simple. Very simple and very cliché. Write. Write something...anything. If it's bad, rewrite it tomorrow. If it's short, write more tomorrow. There are so many excuses not to write - family, job, yard work, housework, too tired, etc. But there is always time. There is always a way. Just write.
C.R. Sturgill Blood Tides is actually a rewrite, 20+ years later, of a book I wrote in college. I penned the original novel, entitled The Last Pirate, when I was around 20. Then I set it on a shelf and never touched it again until last year. I read it and then rewrote it from the beginning, doing a lot more historical research (no internet in 1990...), mixing in a lot of life experience, developing deeper themes, and building a stronger love story. However, the basic story and its colorful characters remain in place. Now, why I wrote the original novel, I can't really recall. I always believed the story had potential though and thought about it off and on over the years. It was so satisfying to finally be able to complete the story and publish it.
