Joshua Cartwright One method of getting going is to write down a list of all the things the character works not do next. Yes, this works, especially if you sleep on it. Or... Make something up you know you are going to edit. Having something concrete really helps you to have a frame of reference for what you don't want, which can lead to what you do.
Joshua Cartwright For me, it's being able to help and influence others : whether in non-fiction via self-help advice or teach a moral precept via a story - to know someone has benefitted or even just laughed because of what I wrote is fantastic. I was told one of my books The Girl Who Took Forever was being used by a child with autism and he was engaging with it more than usual stories because he could colour it while he read it. That felt so good.
Joshua Cartwright I used to write for British UK women's magazines and my deputy editor Liz (hello Liz if you ever read this) told me: "You can save a good idea with bad writing but you can't save a bad idea with good writing) Well, Stephen King has managed to do it a few times but for most of us... the point being that you should just get your book written... and most of the corrections you do are at the editing stage. Yes, I think some people plan stuff out nine books in advance and good for them if they can do it. But my book The Granny JJ Adventures went through at least 15 edits until I was ready - and I liked the first drafts as well! So write first, edit after.
Joshua Cartwright My children have always liked me making up stories for them. I was telling my little girl bible stories when she said: "Daddy, can you put me in the story." So I tried telling the story of Jesus and Him blessings the little children - and her as one of them. Then I added some dialogue and thought - well, I'm interested in first century culture. I think I could make a good go of this. So I have started writing a children's book about a girl who regularly comes into contact with Jesus.

It was the same for my books : The Granny JJ Adventures - they started as (badly made up) bedtime stories!

Hope that helps!

Joshua
