When I'm struggling I place one of my characters in a difficult situation unrelated to the plot I'm working on and see what they do. It helps me to understand their motivations so that I have a better idea of how they will behave in the "real" story - or maybe that the plot line I have in mind does not fit them.

A novel about an abused woman. I was taken aback by recent news stories about cover-ups of abuse that took place in the 1980s in Westminster as I had already set my story up around an MP who is about to be exposed as an abuser!

Near my home there is the remains of a Norman castle. When I researched its history I discovered the history behind my latest book. I was inspired to re-tell the history from the point of view of one of the participants, a young woman given in marriage to a warrior in exchange for his help for her father.
