The freedom to express oneself. There is also the pleasure of sealing a contract with the reader, who agrees to enter one's fantasy world and to suspend disbelief, in exchange for a very modest sum of money...... one's own part of the deal is to entertain, and to make the reader laugh and cry and love the heroes and hate the villains.

When I was on a university expedition to East Greenland in 1962, a number of pretty hair-raising incidents occurred, and I observed some rather mysterious things going on which probably had something to do with USA / USSR Cold War skullduggery. I have held the germ of an idea in my head ever since then, and a couple of years ago it formed itself into a story that had to be written down.

Through the influence of a brilliant English teacher called Fred Nicholls, way back in the 1950's......... he taught me to love literature and to have no fear of the creative process.

No new novel at the moment. But since my latest book (the Greenland thriller called "Acts of God") is self-published, my current priority is to SELL it! When I have covered my publishing costs and moved into profit, maybe then I will start to think about the next creative enterprise.

Nice and simple. Write about what you know. That frees you up from laborious and time-consuming research, and lets you concentrate on the creative process.

Don't like the phrase -- too many negative assumptions built into it. Why should one bother to sit down at one's keyboard and strive to write something if there is no inspiration? Get out into the garden, or go for a walk! I only sit down to write if I have something to say -- and when the force is with me I write very fast. I've been writing for more than 40 years, and have never suffered from this thing called by others "writers block". Does that make me a freak, or just lucky?
