R.S. Markel Naturally everyone is probably different in this regard, but having spoken to other writers I have found some commonalities in what helps one to overcome the absence of that curious state of mind where ideas and imagery seem to flow from nowhere. The first is removal of all distraction. When I wrote my first book, as a result of peculiar circumstances my family and I were living in a virtually empty place. The freedom from things and concerns allowed something to happen, a strange something I am still trying to understand, namely, a novel popping out of nowhere when I intended only to conjure a short story for my daughter. The second technique effective for me is walking, or ambling really, letting the mind wander where it wills and not seeking a goal of any kind. Especially when done in a natural setting walking seems to help connect one to the place from where ideas flow. One last thing to help bring forth ideas is listening to classical music. Some pieces seem to work better than others, those of a subtle and moody type are best for me.
