Michele Kimbrough It doesn't take much to get me writing. Sometimes a rant will make me want to write and it winds up on my blog or on facebook. Sometimes it's a situation I observed or a conversation I overheard. Then other times, it's a laughable headline -- or a tragic one. Almost anything inspires me to write.
Michele Kimbrough There's a lot of advice floating around out in the web-o-sphere. LOL! The biggest thing I think I can add to the plethora of advice is "be yourself." There are going to be so many times that you will either be pressured to or advised to write something that doesn't suit you. Don't do it. Write what comes from your writer-spirit, your writer's-heart. That's the only way to be authentically you. It will be your voice and uniquely you. Don't cave into the pressure to be like everybody else -- or the desire to be popular. Let it happen organically.
Michele Kimbrough I'm currently working on a children's chapter book called Najah's Quest. It's a story I'm writing for someone in particular -- a friend's granddaughter. I wanted to do something special for her. It will, hopefully, be available Easter weekend.
Michele Kimbrough My imagination can go to some very dark and scary places -- and I don't necessarily want to write dark, scary stories. So I sometimes turn to FBI cases and pick the most unusual but interesting ones and save them for times when I want to write something different. The idea for Dangerously in Love came from two FBI cases -- of course, I embellished those cases so much that it's purely fictional. But the basis of the plot was torn from two FBI headliners.
Michele Kimbrough Writer's block, for me, usually happens when my life is beating me down to the point where I can't focus on anything but my own survival. Sometimes I just stop writing until I get things under control. Other times, I use the emotions I'm feeling and pour it into a character's situation.
Michele Kimbrough The best thing about being a writer is that I can live in my imagination -- the endless feed of stories and scenarios that I can manipulate into a character's life is truly a fun and exhilarating endeavor.
