James Gilmartin I am not sure I buy into the entire "writer's block" conundrum. If you brainstorm enough before sitting down to write, you won't have a problem with writer's block. Now, with story development, I meet a blockade there, and I believe every writer does. For that, I'll step away for an hour or two and either take a walk, watch a movie, read a book, play a video game, see a friend, pray and meditated (on things other than the story), drive around, or play a game with my children.
James Gilmartin I love brainstorming a story. For me, that is the top. I enjoy every moment of pacing in my office, walking down my neighborhood at the midnight hour, or driving silently in my car as I contemplate and brainstorm a story. I love talking to myself and hold conversations between myself, God, and the other characters. I love dreaming about the stories as they develop. Now, don't get me wrong, I love writing the story and I even enjoy revising and editing it. But, brainstorming is my favorite.
James Gilmartin Write what you love and enjoy. Do not feel pressured to write in a certain way or for a particular audience. Master your craft. Experiment and play with words. Do not settle on your first or second idea. Brainstorm and develop multiple ideas. Remember to step away from a story when it makes you insane. A little break is good for the soul and creativity.
James Gilmartin Several projects. A comedy for film. I have completed the screenplay; however, my friend Travis and I are going to create some short films and webisodes to coincide with it before filming a full length feature. I am also working on the next Spiral Effect novella and a Satirical Series of picture books for grownups titled Jeremiah.
James Gilmartin When the story begs for me to tell it. I am always feeling that tug too. So many stories knock knock knock on my skull and demand my time. I don't mind it though.
James Gilmartin As most of my ideas, it comes in the form of moving images that captivate me. I am usually walking, driving, or stargazing when the idea arrives. For my recent book, The Yahnolite Histories, which I plan on writing in the next few months, I was driving around in silence. Thankfully, I had my pocket recorder with me.
