“I try to keep the science in my fiction - with only an occasional "highly improbable". I think it gives the characters something interesting to do. I'm happy to answer your questions.”

I once saw a black helicopter - you know, the ones with no lettering or call signs painted on the side. It landed at a local airport where my company sometimes rented conference rooms for training. The class peeked out during a break and there it was, parked at the terminal. But it did have ID... black on a very dark gray body. We checked in the small public area and there were two men in the coffee shop with crisp new blue coveralls with absolutely no patches or ID like pilots normally wear. Then the class started up again and I had to leave. By the next break, the men and the helicopter were gone. Hmm...

I am currently working on a story about establishing a colony on Mars. This is a subject that has interested me for some time, but what got me started was a picture in my head of what the cover art should look like. I touched on the colony in my last book, Venture, about a space station in the near future - the station crew visits the colony on their way to their big adventure. Now I'll expand on the idea.

Practice, practice, practice. Writing is like a sport - you've got to 'just do it.' Also, find a safe critique group. You need feedback that's not from friends. I use critters.org.

Writing! I enjoy research for a new project, and when something comes out well, it's satisfying. It's also probably good for me - since I don't do crosswords or Sudoku, writing is my brain exercise.

Two things: first, I establish a routine that gets me "into the chair" almost every morning at the same time. Secondly, if I'm not being productive I go for a walk. Somehow, walking joggles ideas loose in my mind.

I post to my blog, http://katerauner.wordpress.com/ , usually with one poem and one commentary each week. I'm also about to start writing my next science fiction novel about establishing the first human colony on Mars.

I get a picture in me head - a scene or a situation. Then I collect a pile of interesting links and articles that relate to that idea. That's usually enough to launch me off into a story.
