R.A. Carter-Squire There's nothing more pleasant than the sound of a laughing baby. Unless you live alone and you hear the sound at two in the morning.
R.A. Carter-Squire There have been so many worlds over the years that I don't have a favorite. The popular place, at the moment is Game of Thrones. In this world, I'd travel as a trader. High enough status to be accepted everywhere, but not so conspicuous to attract undue notice. I want to observe the people without making them suspicious. A lower class person could get killed, a higher class person would be too busy keeping my position.
R.A. Carter-Squire My recently published book came from an incident in my own childhood. I wanted to tell that story, but the characters strolled off into another direction. No matter how well you plan the story you start to write, there will always be other ideas along the way. How you chose to deal with those side trips is up to you, but they will always be there waiting for you to come back to visit and explore.
R.A. Carter-Squire The story idea inspires me to tell the tale. Ideas come from everywhere -- odd comments during a conversation, sights and sounds during the day, old memories, but nothing is lost. Every idea is saved and reviewed for future use as a single story or multiple points to trip up the hero in a story.
R.A. Carter-Squire I tell everyone who says to me, "I couldn't write a book" that you have to start. Put that first word on the page, on a computer or with pen in hand, but do it. Worry about how good you are after finishing the first draft. The fear of failure is what keeps most people from becoming a writer. They think they need to be perfect from the first letter and that just isn't true. Go for it.
R.A. Carter-Squire The best thing about being a writer is being able to escape for a few hours every day. I don't have anything to escape from, but jumping into a different world at will is an enormous thrill and responsibility that gives me more happiness every time I sit down at the keyboard.
R.A. Carter-Squire Most of the time, I simply reread the story to find where I was going in the first place. Writer's block is more about losing your way than being stumped by a problem in the story.
