I got the idea for 'The Stranger from the Sea' about ten years ago when I was walking along the beach and saw a man lying in the surf face down. I asked him if he needed help, and he said, "No, I'm fine." I went on my way, but then the thought of him lying there made me think what if that man had been naked and had fallen off a ship and then the ship became a spaceship and the man an alien fleeing a war on his planet.
So, I went home and wrote the first pages of what would be a short story. The story sat around a long time, but this summer I decided to give myself a summer writing challenge to turn that story into a book, and that motivated me and the book got written.

Write! Write! Write! Sit down and write until the pen bleeds or your fingers do. Writing is hard work. Be prepared to sweat and keep at it. Write! Write! Write!

As T.S. Eliot wrote, I get "to murder and create" and all other things in my fictional worlds. The create part is most fun, and the murder part never is, but sometimes a story needs that to happen. Mostly, I enjoy writing because I write about the things I would want to read.

It doesn't happen often, but when it does I go out and take a brisk walk. Usually, I start writing in my head and can't wait to get back to my desk and get to work.

I'd love to get into the pages of Hemingway's 'The Sun Also Rises' and travel with Jake from Paris to Spain.
