I'm taking a break from my e-reader this summer to catch up on the stack of paperbacks that have been threatening to take over my nightstand. I've just finished reading "Finishing the Hat" by Stephen Sondheim and I'm getting ready to start a couple of Lee Child books my niece gave me.

I try not to write about my own experiences because it's a little too close to home. However, a few years ago, a body was found in the middle of nowhere, Wyoming. It had no head or hands, apparently to delay identification if the body were ever found. I thought for a long time about that body, which eventually became the inspiration for the body found during the opening of my "Justice for Katie."

That's a great question! I'm a big fan of Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence. One of the things I like is the wide range of the writer who brought us Miss Marple (my all-time favorite) and Hercules Poirot. Another factor is that Tuppence is a heroine with courage and spunk who is both intelligent and daring but who doesn't put herself in foolishly dangerous situations. Tommy is a worthy support and partner for her and together they're a team for whom I wish Dame Christie had written more books.

I start a new project. While Jake and Emma are my core series, I am also developing a middle grades series that I work on when Jake and Emma won't speak to me.

I know EXACTLY what you mean by "won't speak to me", and it's infuriating.

Someone telling me how much they enjoyed my books. I had someone tell me that they sat down to read a chapter and ended up reading all night. Nothing better in the world than knowing what you wrote gave someone else that much pleasure.

Write! I know, sounds obvious but if you want to be a writer, you have to develop your "writing muscle." I have written literally millions of words over the course of my career so when I turned my attention to fiction, the basic skills were there - grammar, sentence structure, story mapping and of course basic word processing.

I am currently writing the third Jake and Emma book, Justice for Katie, as part of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which challenges authors to write an entire 50,000 word novel during the month of November. I find it an exciting challenge and Justice is shaping up well. I expect to complete the final draft before Thanksgiving, then lay it aside for a few weeks before coming back to start rewrites.

I love to read and reading inspires me to write! I've spent my life working with people in crisis and in listening to their stories, it's opened my eyes to experiences and situations I would not otherwise have seen. I love stories and I love puzzles so my books weave the human interest of strong, vivid characters with the puzzle of a mystery. Once I sit down and start writing, the stories flow - sometimes faster than I can keep up with! I'm always excited to see how the concept in my mind works itself out on paper.

Main Street Murder is the second in my Jake and Emma Mystery series, published in October 2014. I'm currently at work on the third, Justice for Katie. The three books (Too Cute to Kill) was first have an underlying story arc that begins in the first, grows more prominent in the second and is resolved in the third.
Never fear, each book is a stand-alone mystery. The story arc is a background for the first two but any of the books can be read independently.
