Jeffrey Parfitt I like the world of 1930's Shanghai, the Far East - where anything goes. Exciting times to be sailor...
Jeffrey Parfitt Initially I was outraged at the injustice of an event that happened to someone close to me and was able to project this in to my first novel - the steepest learning curve of all. Following on, I find I meet interesting people with a story to tell and can meld their anecdotes in to my stories - and they want to be heard but not necessarily acknowledged. Real stories are so much more dramatic.
Jeffrey Parfitt Once I start writing, I must write 1000 words a session even if its rubbish. I always drive the plot forward and go back and edit. If I go on the cross trainer with some music, my mind wanders to the plot and I will find a twist.
Jeffrey Parfitt A feeling of accomplishment, a desire to really tell a story and surprise people. For whatever reason, people are genuinely impressed that you can knock a book out.
Jeffrey Parfitt The 1st book is definitely the hardest (and possibly your worst) as its a learning curve. Use an independent editor as you will not see your own mistakes. Try and develop a rhinoceros skin as you cannot please all your readers. Write for yourself. Forget submission rejections and all the advice from agents. They seldom take on new blood and their advice varies so much as to be useless.
Jeffrey Parfitt THE NARROW GATE. the 4th Maddox book. I met with people involved in political close protection work and the details of my story are accurate. In fact, I feel my stories must have a factual element where the reader is enlightened.
Jeffrey Parfitt My books are based on personal experience intertwined with people I have met along the way. There are a lot of very interesting people out there. You would be surprised who you know!
