The best advice I have for aspiring writers is be a reader. Read everything. Read all the time. Then, make quiet time for yourself, and practice your craft. You can't be a writer if you don't write.

While I don’t segregate my reading by season, I have a large stack I am always working my way through. Because I attend The HippoCamp Creative Nonfiction Conference in late summer, my stack recently doubled.
I read constantly. I read literary and otger magazines while I’m washing up for bed, brushing my teeth, or soaking in the tub. With boohs, I read several at once, but usually different genres. I can read several essays over lunch, or maybe one ot two of the short stories in the super thick collection of Ray Bradbury stories. I have been reading thar one on and off for years.

Well crafted fictional worlds are so inviting. Which one would I love to travel to? What would I do there? Since J.K. Rowling had her birthday yesterday, the same day as my sister's, I have her on my mind. I first read her Harry Potter series to my eldest grandchild, and I admit that I was completely enthralled with the world she created in that series. My childhood imagination was re-opened as I traveled through Hogwarts, Daigon Alley and all the other places Harry and his friends went. That is where I would go. I always wanted to be a wizard. How about you?

My inspiration for writing comes out of the habit and discipline of writing. By showing up and making room, the stories emerge.

I am currently working on a series of essays about my family. In my writing group, a group made up of artists, musicians, poets AND writers, we have been sharing our responses to prompts once a month. For me, the prompts have generated both essays and artwork related to them. It is very stimulating, and I can't stop!

I was giving a lecture about Ohio art quilts at the Ohio Historical Society, so I had done a lot of research in preparation. I was curating The Artist as Quiltmaker exhibition at the time, as well, a long-standing biennial art quilt exhibition, and had access to the entry forms and images going back to 1980. A representative from Ohio University Press was in attendance, and approached my mentor, the late Ricky Clark, about creating a series of books about Ohio quilts. I was selected to write about the art quilt movement in Ohio.
