My next novel currently in progress is about the perils of vanity. Ivan "Vanya" Almazov is the son of a billionaire Russian oligarch. When his father dies unexpectedly, Vanya, a self-obsessed playboy, inherits a shady business empire centred around gold and diamond mines in central Africa. His unbridled vanity drives him to do all the right things for all the wrong reasons. Eventually. tragedy catches up with him forcing a reckoning of his motives.

The answer is simple: the writing. There's no better feeling than, after long and tortuous struggles, you find the only words able to express something that was hitherto elusive and almost impossible to convey. Or the plot twist that makes everything else fall into place. Or a metaphor that illustrates that intangible, fleeting emotion that nothing else can. It's all about the writing. The rest is unimportant.

The initial inspiration came after the disappearance of flight MH370 back in March 2014, possibly the most intractable mystery in the history of aviation. Why would a commercial airliner intentionally switch off all its communications and continue to fly for another 7 hours before vanishing without a trace? If it did indeed crash, how comes that despite years of hi-tech searches, nothing was found apart from a couple of dubious pieces landing on the remote island of Reunion?
Then, the obvious answer struck me.
What if all passengers and crew conspired to disappear? But why would over 200 strangers who never set eyes on each other before, join together in such an unlikely act? The pieces of an intricate puzzle slowly fell into place. There were endless challenges and seemingly difficult conundrums, but in the end, after a few years of research and delving into my own past life experiences, I had a credible plot.
