Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Robert Hays The principal character in "A Shallow River of Mercy" is based on the actual experiences of two men I had as friends. I always wanted to tell their stories and now, several years after both have passed away and without revealing identities, I felt free to do so.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Robert Hays Honestly, I don't think I've ever had writer's block. I trained for and worked as a newspaper reporter, under the pressure of constant deadlines. It still is easy for me to sit down at a keyboard at any time, under virtually any circumstances, and write. As long as I'm satisfied with what I'm working on the physical act of getting it in writing comes easy for me.

Sir, I just finished reading your memoir about Gen. Koch and I just want to thank you for your gripping work about this impressive officer you had the privilege to know. Since I read his and your book "G2: Intelligence for Patton" ten years ago I wanted to learn more about Gen Koch and thus I stormed through your memoir. Robert Hays Thank you for your generous words. My good fortune in meeting and getting to know and work with Oscar Koch clearly was a highlight of my life. He was an amazing man and I count myself privileged to have been associated with him and be of help, however modest, in getting his brilliant book on combat intelligence into print. My only regret is that we did not have more years together. And thank you, also, for your own service to our country.
