Nate Briggs I have an enormous weakness for the Land of Oz - a place which suggests a model of the Afterlife for many people of Christianist persuasion. As a child I was particularly inspired by the title "Lucky Bucky in Oz", in which Mr Bucky travels up a river inside a large wooden whale equipped with furniture. A great fantasy for a little boy: adventure with a sense of safety.
Nate Briggs Mainly books about the Kennedy assassination in '63. All comers welcome! No theory too crazy not to be published! :o)
Nate Briggs It's Alfie and Jonah from the short novel "Alfie". This is because: 1) the story is embedded in the Heartland - far from the madding crowd, if you will. 2) It has Biblical antecedents - recalling the story of Jacob and Rachel. 3) I think the climactic conversation, in a dressing room at Target, is one of the greatest romantic encounters you'll ever read.
Nate Briggs It helps if you're basically unable to shut up for any length of time.
Nate Briggs A very politically incorrect story about older women inspired by the movie "Strangers on a Train".
Nate Briggs The usual.

1) Write what you know. If you don't know anything ... wait.

2) Write every day. It doesn't matter how much.

3) Great storytelling happens when your experience meets the experiences of other people. Writing and reading is a collaboration.
Nate Briggs As odd as it might sound: reading my own stuff. There's a sense of well-being: looking back on what you've spent time writing, and thinking "Well ... I probably couldn't have done any better than that...."
Nate Briggs I've never had it. I've always had too many ideas rather than too few.
