How do you come up with the great characters that you have now, and do you usually think of the characters as family?

Lindsay Cummings I base characters off of lots of things, and get inspiration from artwork, my own friends and family, people i see in the world, etc! I try to always have an aspect of family in my books, because family is such a big part of my life!

When did you finally decide to publish your novel?

Lindsay Cummings When I got my agent at 18, we decided to send it out on submission shortly after. HarperCollins picked it up, and it came out in 2014.

I love to write but I find it difficult to do anything but contemporary. I would love to do something sci-fi/ dystopian but I'm not sure how to create a world that people will like. Any suggestions?

Lindsay Cummings World building is tough. I'd suggest reading some of the greatest scifi books out there, depending on the genre (YA, Adult, NA, etc), and really get a feel for how those authors built their worlds. Read, read, read. Then allow yourself to dive in and really CREATE!

Lindsay Cummings it's just 2! The Murder Complex and The Death Code, but if you want some extra stories, check out THE FEAR TRIALS, a short story about Meadow's training and one of her earliest enemies :)

I am in quite a difficult state; I really want to do writing for a living, although I am concerned that I won't be able to pay all the bills. I wanted to ask you, if you have part-time jobs next to your writing?

Lindsay Cummings Nope, writing is all I do! It's not always easy, but if that's the dream...go for it. And be prepared to make sure you are good at saving money for the rocky times :)

From a reader who is absolutely in love with Angelfall by Susan EE, what similar books would you recommend ?

Lindsay Cummings well...selfishly, I'd have to say THE MURDER COMPLEX and THE DEATH CODE...lol. But I've actually NOT red Angelfall yet, it's on my TBR! (though the girl who did the angelfall audiobook actually did the MURDER COMPLEX audiobook so that's kind of cool!)

Lindsay Cummings I hope you like them when you do read them :) Being an author is awesome and scary all at once. Awesome, when I realize I'm living my dream. Scary, when I realize I have to keep writing GREAT books to continue living this dream!

Is the Death Code the last in the Murder Complex series? I absolutely adored the first one and can't wait to move on to the next, I don't want the series to end that soon!!!

Lindsay Cummings yes, it is! But there's also THE FEAR TRIALS, an ebook about Meadow's training. Check it out, it was super fun for me to write :)

Was is hard to write Meadow and Zephyr as characters? The both seem to have to have pretty complicated personalities. Also, would you ever consider coming to San Antonio, TX?? No one ever comes here, haha!

Lindsay Cummings I actually connected to them pretty easily, because this was the "book of my heart" , as some writers say. As for the supporting characters---that was where the struggle was!

what is the correct order to read the murder complex series? the fear trials, the murder complex then the death code or the murder complex, the fear trials then the death code? thanks

Lindsay Cummings Fear Trials can be ready at any time! Murder Complex is book 1, Death Code is book 2. Enjoy! :)

Would you say The Fear Trials is essential to the plot of the story and should be read before The Death Code, or will the plot of TMC still make sense if I haven't read The Fear Trials?

MISS LINDSAY!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE MURDER COMPLEX AND DEATH CODE! I almost scream in the mall(thank goodness I refrain myself) after reading the first book's ending. Is there any possibility you'll come to the Philippines on your book signing tour? I'd love to meet you.

If you could spend the day with a character from a book you've written, who would it be?

Lindsay Cummings I'd love to spend the day in the Core with Birdie from Balance Keepers. She's a really fun character who gets to hang with magical creatures and can swim like a mermaid without ever having to come up for air :)
