Sherry Alexander Buttercup and Wesley in Princess Bride because they prove that sometimes love hurts, but it is so worth it in the end.
Sherry Alexander I read, watch, listen, and mow. Reading other authors' books helps me get focus. Watching people and kids interact at the library, the grocery store, the coffee shop, or on the school playground inspires me. Listening to people talk, the news, radio talk shows, and overhearing snippets of my grand kids conversations with their friends gives me new ideas on how to handle whatever story or article I am working on. And, mowing our 4 acre field allows me the time to rework a troublesome scene or chapter in my mind.

If none of that works, then I set the piece I am presently working on aside, and start something new.
Sherry Alexander The best thing for me as a writer is the opportunity to write what I believe, and the second best thing is to have a child enjoy something I wrote. That happened this month when the daughter of a friend read an article I did on Screevers for Guardian Angel Kids' July issue. She told me she would be "screeving" all summer.

Now that is the absolute best part of writing!

Sherry Alexander Don't be afraid to write. There are so many wonderful websites and on-line courses that can get you started down the right path. For me, I took both the beginning and the novel writing courses through the Institute of Children's Literature to begin writing for kids. I love their program. But I am not stopping there.
Sherry Alexander I am in the process of self-publishing a picture book on hunger and what it does to kids through Halo Publishing International. It's called Oliver's Hunger Dragon, and it starts like this:

"Oliver has a secret he doesn't want to share. He has a dragon, and it follows him everywhere."

In addition to Oliver, I am doing the final revisions of my first action/adventure upper MG novel set in 1883 Arizona. The MC is a 14 year old boy who sets off on his own to track down the animal responsible for his mother's death.
Sherry Alexander I love writing especially about things that capture my interest. It can be as coincidental as a picture in an old magazine or an over-heard question from a child. Inspiration is everywhere.
Sherry Alexander I found a picture of a camel tied up to a hitching post in the old west. That was it for me. I wanted to know how it got there and why.
