All the time. To writers out there encountering that hesitation or discomfort, I'd say lean into it. When something feels difficult, I think it's more likely to be true. By all means stay in your head if you wish but bring all of your insecurities to bear in service of whatever you are writing.

I've not yet had writer's block. I don't have the time. I think when the writing is not coming, it means that you're not yet meant to write. The mind writes what it wants to write and when it's ready to write. If the writing is not coming, keep writing but in your mind. Sometimes "writing" means thinking, musing, or just letting things fix themselves. Other times, it means crafting like hell.

The best thing is - without a doubt - connecting with readers.

As an aspiring writer myself, I'd say read, write with no respite.

Am thinking of more poems. Thinking. I'd like to do a kind of sequel to BURN, but haven't figured the form this could take as yet. I just know that I still want to inhabit the spaces I made in that book in some way. Also, am reading the poetry of Eric Roach, a key Trinidadian poet, and reviewing the work of many Caribbean poets. In between all of this, I like to research things, write about the lives of others.

Ideas can come at any moment: driving in a taxi, in-between wakefulness and sleep; at the cinema; at the office; on an assignment; in the shower. First a single line or concept might come. And then I let it sit. I mull for a while. Until I feel I can attempt.

BURN started from two main sources: newspaper clippings; and the streets of Port-of-Spain. I was writing material over the course of years, and suddenly I felt things were beginning to resonate, saw relationships. That's when I felt this could work as a book; could stand as a coherent, thematic whole.
