I question the existence of block as it is the opposite of the drive that makes you want to write in the first place. If you are trying to chase a book deal and are writing under duress then I can understand why authors get stuck, but then they are not writing for themselves but at the whims of external bodies. If you are writing for art's sake then there should be little problem becoming stuck.

It's like eating an elephant you can only do it one mouthful at a time. The first step in writing is the first word, then sentence, then paragraph and finally page. One word of warning don't be tempted to review what you write too early. Write three chapters then if you must check the first chapter. The reason I warn against re-writing too early is that you can put yourself moving forwards.
