Raquel Byrnes I'd love to see Rivendell. It always seemed a place of such breathtaking beauty. It also seems incredibly peaceful.
Raquel Byrnes Yes! Sheriff Riley of the sky settlement in my steampunk book winged out so many unexpected zingers! He is charming and funny, but also quite ruthless and the things he said often made me take a step back and change what I thought he might do. It was fascinating.
Raquel Byrnes I would definitely take Sue Grafton. If not for pure enjoyment along, then also for variety and volume. I would take the music of The Beetles. Partly because it reminds me of home, but also because it is pretty cheerful for the most part. I would take astronaut food...nutritionally sound, keeps for a long time, requires very little prep.
Raquel Byrnes I have a scene in my steampunk novel in which heroine straps on some extendable wings and leaps from a desert walking machine to escape capture. It was so fun to research flying suits and watch GoPro videos of it. Every muscle twitch, every banking maneuver was so amazing. So writing it felt like I was able to really see it from a character's point of view.
Raquel Byrnes I Skype weekly with my brother who lives in Seattle and we often get into these great discussions about reason and emotion or technology and progress. A think a lot of my ideas stem from thoughts I have while arguing a certain point or hearing another person's point of view on a subject.
Raquel Byrnes I think habits are stronger than inspiration. Getting in the chair and writing even if you don't feel like it gets the book done. When I was a new author, I would despair for my muse to inspire me...now I sit down and type and know he'll show up eventually.
Raquel Byrnes I'm currently working on a YA fantasy. There's something about magic and quests that I've always loved. A sword fight or two isn't bad either.
Raquel Byrnes Read a lot. Write everyday. Its the only way to get better...really.
Raquel Byrnes The best thing about being a writer is the ability to bring to life the daydreams of my youth. Before all the worlds and villains were only in my head, but writing gives me the power to pull them into this world and share them with others.
Raquel Byrnes Believe it or not, I actually watch movie trailers to help with writer's block. I don't know if its the clear and concise way they present a story idea, but I find it helps me to focus. Usually my writer's block is a result of my straying from the story path or something within the writing process that has thrown me off my game.
