Michael J. McCann In general, writing is a compulsion for me. It's something I have to do. It's a form of self-expression so powerful it dominates my waking hours. Recently, I had a dream that pointed the way for a new direction in my writing, so it also works in the background while I'm asleep! As I often say to people, writing should be a passion for someone wishing to do well at it. Being a dabbler or a hobbyist is fine, but true writers are consumed by the need to write. That's the case for me.
Michael J. McCann As you may know, I'm now reviewing mysteries and thrillers for the New York Journal of Books. This summer I'm looking forward to reading From Holmes to Sherlock by Mattias Bostrom, a study of how Sherlock Holmes became a modern icon of detective fiction. I'm also going to be reading The Lake, the latest Scandinavian Noir offering from Lotte and Soren Hammer, and Fateful Mornings by Tom Bouman. Watch for my reviews when these books publish this summer!
Michael J. McCann I had a Canadian series in mind, and had the the good fortune to locate a subject matter expert--a retired Ontario Provincial Police manager who has given me a good perspective on the mechanics and politics of the job. I developed characters who believe in what they are doing and do the best they can with the limited resources they have. I think readers will find the new characters in this series very likeable.
Michael J. McCann I've been reading voraciously since I was a kid, and I love writers who can tell a good story. The best writers hook you in and you think, "okay, what happens next?"
Michael J. McCann I'm currently working on a new Canadian detective series.
Michael J. McCann Develop a thick skin--it's extremely hard to get published these days. Be realistic--unless you're Margaret Atwood, don't expect to make money from your writing. Be sure you have a good editor so you can offer the best product to your readers. Don't give up!
Michael J. McCann Being able to create something new and receiving feedback that your readers enjoy your writing. At an event this past summer, I had someone thank me for writing my novels. This was very touching.
Michael J. McCann I go for a long walk and try to clear my head. Then I think, "where do I go from here?" Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes is isn't, but a break from my computer often helps.
