Ruth Musgrave Being able to do what I love, have my dogs with me while I work, and on a good day seeing the ideas rattling around my brain make it on to paper in the way I imagined. As a kid who found writing so frustrating, I still can't believe I write for a living and how much I love it.
Ruth Musgrave I am working on a couple board, picture book, and middle grade books, and of course the magazine. I like to work on many things at once, so when I get bogged down with one project I can switch gears with a different age level or topic.
Ruth Musgrave Gosh it is so easy to get in my own way and start over thinking something. Then it's like a maze trying to get back to a creative flow. Because I often have back to back deadlines or even competing deadlines, I've found ways to crash through it. I try writing in a new location, during this stay-at-home time that may mean moving to a different room or chair. If I've been writing in silence, then I turn on a favorite movie, TV show, or music for background noise. It's amazing how quickly it becomes white noise. When we can leave the house again, I might head over to a coffee shop or a park for an hour or two. Last, I just write something ridiculous (and pure fiction), like a list of what I'll take on a vacation to Saturn or 10 reasons why chocolate really is health food. Just an hour of creative freedom seems to do the trick for me.
Ruth Musgrave As a huge mystery fan, I think I'd join Amelia Peabody and her family on a dig in Egypt. (Elizabeth Peters)
Ruth Musgrave Just read the amazing newly published book by Jenn Resse, A Game of Fox & Squirrels by Jenn Reese. Then my plan is to revisitisome of my favorite middle grade books for a bit of adventure and a laugh including Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, Spy School by Stuart Gibbs, and Holes by Louis Sachar.
