Don't self-publish until your book is truly ready. And when you think it's truly ready, it's probably not truly ready. Patience is tough, but the eyes see a different book when it's freshly completed than they see only a couple months later.

To thoroughly answer this for Exigency would be spoilerific, but I'll say that the initial spark came from reading results data from a survey a couple years ago. It may have been NASA asking. The question was: "Would you volunteer to go colonize Mars, with the understanding that it would be a one-way trip, and no possibility of a return to Earth?"
7 percent answered with an emphatic yes. 26% said they'd consider it. I went with this idea that if one-way trips are on the table, then an even more distant destination, light years away to one of the many Earth-like planets we keep finding, would not be so far fetched.

I'm in the middle of a new release at present (Exigency), so not a lot of writing getting done. And by "not a lot" I mean very little. And by "very little" I mean none.
But, in a few weeks I'll be delving back into the 3rd book in the Matt Turner Series, RETURN. Some rewriting needed there, adds and cuts, new ending. And don't ask me what the old ending was. [puke]
