Inga Simpson Thanks, Sarah! That is so lovely and rewarding to hear.
My next book will be out early 2021. A bit of a wait! But there might be a children's book on trees out late next year. :)
cheers,
Inga
Inga Simpson Being able to work from home, among trees, and just make things up. And the opportunities to meet and talk with so many wonderful writers and readers.
Inga Simpson Perhaps how I ended up so short, in a tall family.
Inga Simpson Hi Carolyn,
You've right - I haven't done that. Thanks for reminding me. I'll dig it out and put something up over the next few weeks.
I think the more I write (and read) about nature the more details I find myself noticing out in the real world.
Responses from readers about their own experiences of birds and trees, and their appreciation of books in which the natural world is central, is also very rewarding. :)
Inga Simpson Hi Bernie,
Thanks for this question.
I have learned a lot from reading (and re-reading) many works of nature writing - eg. Jay Griffiths, Rick Bass, Barry Lopez, Annie Dillard, and Mark Tredinnick - in combination with spending a lot of time immersed in nature. Learning how to slow down and pay close attention to the natural world is the first step, I think. Similarly, in the writing itself, trying to get deeper, lingering on a few specific details is important.
But I think what makes nature writing interesting - more than just description - is the writer's relationship with a particular place, and their imaginative exploration of that relationship. Perhaps trying to tap into that connection is a good place to start.

Inga Simpson Hi Lesley,
Thanks for the question, and I'm glad you enjoyed NEST and WHERE THE TREES WERE. I don't think I'm a sequels kind of writer, I'm afraid. I'm always moving on to a new world as I leave each book. And I like to leave a story not quite tied up, continuing on in the reader's imagination, if that makes any sense? I'm sure I will return to similar territory though. And my next book, although nonfiction, is very much set in the same world as NEST.
warm wishes,
Inga
Inga Simpson Hi Marianne - yes! (as I think you've seen by now). It's out in 12 days. I hope you like it :). (Sorry for the delay in replying - my phd is due at the end of the month).
Inga Simpson I haven't! It's on my list. Good?
