Who wouldn't love to watch Harry Potter play a game of Quidditch?

Do the work! Be disciplined about writing. Treat it like it's important and do it everyday. The hardest part is sitting down and writing that first word. So, go get a glass of water or a cup of coffee or a Coke, sit down and get to work!

A couple of my favorite authors have new books out this spring. Scott Turow's "Testimony" hit the marketplace today. He's a great writer whose legal plots twist and turn like a Grand Prix racer. On June 6, Joseph Kanon releases his next novel, "Defectors." Kanon is a master at recreating the heavy atmosphere of the Cold War and then dropping unsuspecting, ordinary people right into the middle of the fray.
In addition, on the non-fiction side, I'll be reading "Child Star," Shirley Temple Black's autobiography, and Richard Powers' biography of J. Edgar Hoover, "Secrecy and Power."

Will McLean and Annie Kate Gervais from Pat Conroy's The Lords of Discipline. Although we suspect their romance is doomed from the beginning, Conroy draws Will and Annie Kate with such startling hilarity and depth that they jump off the page. If you haven't read this great book, treat yourself! Conroy's prose is lyrical, funny and poignant.

I've always enjoyed reading. In grade school, our librarian, Mrs. Bess Hammond, introduced us to the Dewey Decimal System. I spent a lot of time in the 92's--biographies--and eventually came to enjoy history too. As a teenager, I started reading spy novels dealing mostly with the cold war and began to wonder if I had the skill to write a book of my own. Years passed, but I eventually accepted the challenge and wrote The War Widow, which was set at the Nuremberg trials at the end of World War II. It combines history with mystery and got me hooked on writing.

I've just completed a final draft of a story following a World War II bomber pilot. It's called The Reluctant Copilot and describes the conflict which arises when the title character is bumped into the right hand seat, the copilot's, in favor of a less-experienced but politically-connected new guy. The story includes vivid scenes of aerial combat and the evolution of the relationship between the two pilots and their crew.
