I was approached for the idea about Charley by my cousin, John Harvey, an inventor with a great interest in male-female dynamics. He created Charley's character and asked me to write the book with him. I am doing much of the writing at this point and John is watching, adding insights, and evolving the concept as he and I go. He's an excellent collaborator -- smart, a passionate reader, and clear as a bell on the power of his ideas. I look forward to seeing how Charley evolves as we go!

I have been a professional writer for 35 years, and written everything from radio ads for Doan's Tiny Back Pills to racy novels. So I've got the discipline thing dialed in. I don't wait for inspiration to come find me, but instead I sit with a blank piece of paper and I simply listen. I just get quiet and sooner or later it shows up. The key is having total belief that you WILL get your writing in ... may not be the best thing you ever wrote, but you did it. Each day. That's what counts.

I am writing two books right now ... One is a funny, edgy novel about a transman (female to male transgender) spy named Charley who is both deeply intuitive and fearless. Set in San Francisco, it's follows Charley's midlife crisis as he befriends a lesbian police sergeant and a society dominatrix ... also having crises of their own.
My other book is a memoir about the huge personal transformation I went through after my daughter, Teal, suddenly died in 2012. Not long after she died, Teal emerged as a presence I can only describe as angelic. She began to guide me on a very specific course of healing from the afterlife ... and I followed.

For me writing is not only what I do, it's wonderful therapy -- a chance to look at my own experiences under the magnifying glass in order to describe them accurately. This is true whether I'm in fiction or non fiction mode ... as I can only experience life, and describe it, through my own lens. So be as honest as you can, and don't forget the poetry is in the details. (That's where the fun is, as well!)
When I published my first book, Doin' the Box Step, I 'knew' it would be published -- I just never let go of that truth. And it worked (Random House was my first publisher.) Then when I published my first non-fiction title, How Much Joy Can You Stand?, I 'knew' I would get a big deal from a major publisher -- which I did. It took three years of persisting, 28 rejections, two major rewrites, learning how to be my own agent and negotiate contracts, as well as signing with a small press. All before the two book deal with Ballantine. Faith, my friend. Just try to hang in there and believe in yourself!
