Well, several of my books are based in true life experiences. I was actually warned by gov't official that researching the Russian Mafia and writing about the incidents that had occurred could be harmful to me and my family.

Never ever let anyone tell you that you're writing is not good enough. They can certainly tell you where you can improve, but don't let them take away your dream. And write with passion. Readers feel it.

Ideas come from everywhere; a bit of conversation, a headline, people watching. The idea for Obsessed By Darkness came form a news story where several college students had died during their first few weeks at school. I think it was a car accident. My heart was broken for those families as my youngest son had just started his freshman year at Penn State. Weeks later, I thought what if students died from a new drug sweeping campus. I immediately called my son and again gave him the speech about drugs.
The story took form, but after a year, it still didn't seem right to me. Then the psychopath showed up in my mind and I had no choice but to rewrite.

I don't think writers really get blocked. For me, when I come to a point that my story just stops, I know I need to step back from my work in progress and allow the constant static that my character's create in my head to filter. I allow myself to have some fun. Enjoy the world and people around me. You can't write about life if you don't live it. I might do something creative that is totally none writing related. Soon enough my mind wanders back into the world I'm creating and my characters have hashed out their differences. Sounds nuts, I know.
I also don't worry about how long the book is taking me to write. Obsessed By Darkness, which released in June, took me nearly two years. It was worth the wait, in my opinion.
