In 1998, I first read about "hyperthymesia" - now referred to as HSAM, or "hyper superior autobiographical memory" - which directly led to the creation of my main character Jeremy Peoples in the novel "Recollection." From there, I found inspiration in real life circumstances, movies and my own imagination. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that "A Prayer for Owen Meaney" was a huge thematic influence, along with Pink Floyd and the movie "Talk Radio."

Stay true to your vision for your story, but be humble enough to accept advice, and thoughtful enough to decide when to hold firm and when to make changes. Also: you will make mistakes. It's not the end of the world, even though it will feel like it when publishing for the first time. Oh, and hire a professional editor. It is absolutely worth it.
