As a writer, something I appreciate is the challenge of it. Lately I have been crafting pieces of vastly different lengths. What is needed for a 200-word piece is far different from 1000-word piece or a 50,000-word piece. Having opportunities to craft writings of different lengths is always a helpful way to stay fresh in the craft.

Oh, there are a variety of things that inspire me. Sometimes a particular place can help. Listening to particularly poetic music or a really powerfully written film also stores up some inspiration. My most reliable inspiration go to is just having a lot of space and time. Writing outside, and having a whole 12 hour chunk to write, works best.
And yet, one must admit that few things are as inspiring as a deadline.

The release of my first book is consuming most of my typical writing time, but next in line is a follow up project to 10 Questions. Ultimately I'd like to create a three-book series where each book focuses on one aspect of Luther's concept of the Christian life. He labeled these oratio, meditatio, and tentatio. Prayer, meditation on the Scriptures, and the assaults of the Satan. 10 Questions is the meditatio book. I'm planning on writing the tentatio book next, starting in January, 2023.

I have a variety of ways to try and deal with writer's block. The first thing I'll do is simply get up, walk around the house briefly, maybe get a drink of water, coffee, or wine (depending on the time of day). Then sit back down and try again.
Next, I'll change spots. I'll move from the kitchen table to the couch to the office to the kitchen table again.
I may turn on a record for a song or two.
If that doesn't work, I'm okay calling it a day and trying again tomorrow, but being sure to watch or read something I enjoy in the interim to re-engage my creativity.

If you write, you are a writer. You might be aspiring toward publication, but you are still a writer. Call yourself a writer.
Almost every writer will tell you the main two things that lead to being a better writer are to write more and to read more. I'm certainly a product of that reality.
The best book in my opinion on writing is Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. Pick up a copy of that and enjoy.

Helping others build Biblical fluency had been a key component of several projects over the past few years. In my preaching, teaching, and devotion time I found myself returning again and again to key questions to shed light on biblical texts. Those turned into the questions highlighted in Ten Questions to Ask Every Time You Read the Bible.
