I get up in the morning, check the news, look around at the world, and decide there's still a lot to be done.

I'm working on a play titled, "A Rough Suburb In The City Of Life." It's about three homeless people who get taken in and brutalized by a wealthy old woman.

Get as many, and as varied, experiences as you can. Imagination is the beast that powers your fingers on the keyboard, and it's a hungry beast and needs to be constantly fed. Don't write about what you know; write about what you don't know - that's how you get to be really, really good.

The best thing about being a writer is that I'm my own boss. The worst thing about being a writer is that I'm my own boss. The other best thing is that when you connect, when a reader tells you, "Oh my, you just blew me away with that story," it's just the greatest feeling in the world.

There's something of a myth that a writer should be writing 24/7/365. I don't, though I do write every day. Sometimes the stuff comes, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't I just don't worry about it. Maybe I'll do something else, or maybe I'll sit and write nonsense. One thing that helps is that I keep a lot of journals and give myself permission to write anything in those that I want - doggerel, silliness, junk. Many times, though, when doing that, something emerges - maybe a character, a plot, a story, and then I just run with it.
