Martin Wall Usually from old folk stories, obscure historical facts, but also from chance events such as the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard. An idea can sometimes become so compulsively interesting that it leads me where I need to be going to develop the initial gem of a thought further
Martin Wall Writing is work, hard work. You have to make the necessary time. Do you need to watch TV, for instance? Any skill atrophies if it is unused, so try to discipline yourself to do at least some writing on any day when you can. I think 3,000 words is a good average output for a session. Respond to deadlines, and get into the habit of setting them for yourself. Even when the last full stop has been written, there'll be a lot more work to do!
Martin Wall Never quite knowing how the thing will work out. Creative work should have a kind of independent life of its own. A good sign is when you are researching and documents and references 'magically' appear, just when you need them!
