To get inspired is, to me, to limber up. To think freely. So I try to do that. After a while I'll take a look at the books I've been reading, the films I've been watching, the images or news stories that get my attention, and I'll begin to consider what these things have in common. In all likelihood I'm imagining the first pieces of a story and all of the references I've drawn up around me are in some way nurturing that story or an obsession buried in the story.

I've just completed the first draft of a story I will soon submit to an anthology. This has been an exciting year. I've had one short story accepted in a themed anthology, and I've been invited to submit work to several others. No guarantee of publication, so I need to do my best every time. But I've finally reached a degree of recognition where editors invite me to submit work, and that's quite gratifying. Fingers crossed!

Read all the time. Read on the bus and in the bath. Read before you go to sleep. Read during lunch. Read, read, read.

Fortunately (for me, at least) I don't suffer from writer's block. At any given time I have several story ideas. The trick is to manage my time wisely so I can complete the stories I want to write in a timely manner.
