At the moment, Gideon Oliver and his new wife Julie, in Aaron Elkins' "Murder In The Queen's Armes." Gideon and Julie are crazy about each other, have fun, know how to converse, and when they disagree it makes sense. That's current reading. My all-time favorite couple takes me back to childhood reading: Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. If you read the Anne of Green Gables series you know what I mean. I adored them. Still do.

I saw a great need for more understanding and tolerance in the world. I thought that if people knew more about others' spiritual beliefs and religious faiths, they would be more accepting. I thought this should ideally start in childhood, with the stories that underlie each religion. Interestingly, many adults have told me they want "Sacred Stories: Wisdom from World Religions" for themselves, as well as their children, because they have no knowledge of these stories.

I started as a child, probably because I was a constant reader and loved stories, and although there was a long hiatus when I had young children, I've been at it ever since, in one way or another.

The main piece of advice is to read. If you're not a reader you won't be a writer. Learn from those who've gone before, be at home with the language, and write, despite any odds . A teacher and mentor once told me, "Your first million words are practice, whether they're published or not." That's probably true, and worth it.

I get to explore the world, my own thoughts and ideas, and occasionally look back upon what I've written with satisfaction. A few times a year I get a check from a publisher.
