Ariel Schrag There are definitely sections where I'm like, whoa, you really wanted to share that with the world? But I wouldn't change anything.
Ariel Schrag I liked the idea of exploring the world of my twenties -- NYC's hipster queer/trans subculture circa early 2000's -- through the eyes of a straight, cis teenage boy.
Ariel Schrag Writers block usually means you made a mistake somewhere and your book is off down the wrong path. Back up and look at where you may have gone wrong. Trust your gut. Is this boring? Is it unbelievable? Then delete and start again from that point.
Ariel Schrag It's super exciting! I'm not sure I expect people to learn anything specific from the novel -- people will be coming to it with myriad different life experiences -- but I do hope it gets people thinking about gender, sexuality, and identity in ways they possibly haven't before.
Ariel Schrag Adam c'est moi! Seriously, he is mostly based on myself and my two best straight guy friends. And also my younger sister (who's straight but always tags along to lesbian events with me). One straight cis guy friend once said to me, "You're so lucky, wherever you go you get to just hook up with whatever gay girl scene is happening in that city. It's so hard to make friends..." I thought that was really interesting. The idea that someone from the mainstream would be jealous of someone marginalized because of the social perks.
