Thankfully, so far, I haven't ever had writer's block. But, the technique I've heard that I would try, if I ever did, is to do free writing. Where I write whatever is in my mind, no matter what it is.

I had written a short story with a one-armed detective. Why, not exactly sure. I think the missing arm was the excuse to make him a brooding person. I like the old hardboiled stuff, so wanted a detective like that. Then, after working in a youth group for eleven years, I wanted to find a way to help stop human trafficking. Thus, And Angel and a One-Armed Man was born. A way to tell a story around human trafficking and raise money to help fight it.

Just start writing. Don't worry about structure, form, etc. Just write. Also, find other writers who will read your work and give critiques. I said other writers, not your parents. :-)
