L.M. West It is normally a character I have found who suddenly piques my interest. My books are based on real events that happened 400+ years ago and so information is limited, but sometimes I find a name and circumstances that just speak to me. Ann Camell is one such person, the narrator of 'This Fearful Thing' and my next book will feature an innkeeper called Mary Howldine - how could I resist a name like that!
L.M. West Just make a start - doesn't matter how good or bad it is at the beginning! I've always wanted to write a novel - I am now 65 and suddenly thought that if I was going to try I'd better get on with it. Lockdown helped by giving me the time to write and it was a real help to learn something new as well. It's been a steep learning curve but I've loved every minute.
L.M. West My next novel will be about the Aldeburgh witch trials in 1645/6, where Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled Witchfinder General, was invited to search them out.
L.M. West I first came across Ann Camell in a book by Geoffrey Munn 'Southwold: An Earthly Paradise'. I was fascinated to find that the area we had moved into had its own witch but it wasn't until several years later that I put her name into a genealogy search engine that she began to become a real person. I just had to write about her.
