How do you deal with writer’s block?
Cathy Connally I find that if you force yourself to write when you are not in the mood, you may not be happy with the results. I tend to go exercise or take a long walk to get my brain and energy in a new place. Then when you are really feeling it, write like crazy.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Cathy Connally The connections with readers and hearing what they liked and what made sense. It is lovely to hear their experiences in the parts of the world we are writing about and the food traditions and concerns they have. It is also a thrill to see your book published. Very satisfying.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Cathy Connally I will answer this in the context of non-fiction since that is what is my experience. Make the time and dedicate it to writing because everything else will get in the way. Set goals and deadlines for yourself so that you can complete your labour of love. But most of all, just write. Write hot and then edit. But get your thoughts down as those gems will form the basis of your book.

What are you currently working on?
Cathy Connally We are working on our second book which is entitled Flavour with Benefits: Sicily & Calabria. My mother's family is from Calabria and I have a special connection to Sicily. I went to both places in 2019 especially to take pictures for this upcoming book. It will be release in 2022.

How do you get inspired to write?
Cathy Connally It seemed to us in our discussions with people that there is a lot of interest in learning more about the foods we eat but also concern over trying to balance having great tasting food while being healthy. Many recipes in the book are traditional and many others are plant-based to improve health and still have fun.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Cathy Connally We wanted to let everyone travel vicariously while learning about some new ways to make traditional favourite foods and to hear stories about some amazing women in my family and historical women who were from France or loved France.
